The consultation is the first stage of commissioning a portrait or work of art. This is where artist and client can discuss and determine the size, style and format of the piece. If a visit cannot be arranged the artist may want samples, or photographs of the intended hanging space and interior, to inform and establish the correct criteria.

If the piece is intended as a gift or surprise, then the correct criteria can be arrived at upon discussion of likes and dislikes of the recipient.

The consultation will be agreed at the most convenient time for the client, either in person, via telephone, or via email.

A presentation or interim proof may, or may not be required, depending on the nature of the work. It may be necessary for the artist to have time to deliberate, and draw up a visual proposal. The client can at this stage discuss any necessary alterations before the final artwork commences. There will be no additional charges for changes requested by the client at this stage.

Once details of a commission are finalised, a non-refundable deposit is due for work to commence.
